What is Moxibustion?

Moxibustion comes from the tradition of Chinese medicine and acupuncture, and involves the (safe!) burning of the herb Mugwort over special points on the body. Having a moxa treatment in the postpartum phase of childbirth helps to ensure speedy involution of the uterus, brings lost “heat” (energy) back to the mother after her labor and delivery, and assists with general recovery and a return to vitality. By warming the womb with moxibustion, a mother can ease after-pains, soothe rocky emotions, and experience a faster return to her pre-pregnant state.

What is involved in a moxabustion treatment? You will lie comfortably (with your baby, if you wish) as your doula burns the leaves of Mugwort herb in a special, metal pot. While protecting your skin from direct contact with the hot metal, the smoking pot is gently rubbed over your low back and abdomen. It is very pleasurable, much like curling up by the fire in a snuggly blanket. During your treatment, you can choose to have quiet time, or use it as extra time to process your birth story or concerns with your doula.

Note: Some people enjoy the smell of the burning herb, while others do not. It is an earthy, grounding smell that will likely linger in your home and in your clothes for a little while. It is safe to burn moxa around your baby.
